Perhaps it wasn’t unexpected that many of the Vets experienced the same emotions or disorders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], given their exposure to violent or traumatic events. That’s to be expected with war and PTSD. The strange thing was that the family members of the Vets (spouses, parents or siblings,) with whom we also worked, experienced many of the same PTSD symptoms as the soldiers! No battlefield experience whatsoever, but similar emotions, issues and symptoms.
At the end of each day we would all leave exhausted and drained. Each morning we would meet again with our personal assignees to see where they stood with their issues. We would ask them to measure their intensity again on each of their symptoms. It wasn’t remarkable to the practitioners and assistants that the Vets were experiencing great results. However, they were genuinely surprised and pleased by how quickly their symptoms were dissipating. We could all feel the shift in the energy throughout the day and the next morning as our assignees checked back in with us.

In the second part of this article, I’ll tell a little bit more about how we all worked together to facilitate the growth of these brave and remarkable Vets and reveal another surprising and important commonality they shared.
Maybe they were afraid that what we were about to do with them, which they knew little about, wasn’t going to work. Or, maybe they were afraid that it would. None of us really knew what was going to happen. I only know that during the first few moments of introductions I was a little bit afraid…and I’m generally fearless.
Fifteen minutes into the introduction I was downright frightened. Even though we had read their intake forms, I still wasn’t ready for what I was hearing. I remember thinking “What in the world have I gotten myself in to?”
It was too late to turn back, however, and I was already committed to helping them get out of the painful place they were in at the moment. I’m so glad I didn’t let the trepidation get to me, because it ended up being an incredibly fascinating and enlightening experience.
The key to the successful making of the film was the willingness of some very brave Veterans who agreed to put their fate and privacy in our hands.
Many were experiencing common symptoms, such as insomnia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nightmares, night sweats, headaches, depression, migraines, tinnitus and fear of heights or loud noises. Some were so afraid or paranoid that they carried weapons with them at all times!
One of the many things the Vets had in common was their array of negative emotions. We witnessed a spectrum of anxiety, stress, frustration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], resentment, guilt, shame and fear. The most commonly held feelings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, seemed to be anger and betrayal.
The Metamorphosis

By the end of the second day many of the Vets were pretty much over their PTSD issues. A few of them had deeper issues (many were non-war related,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],) that took an extra day or so to deal with. We actually tested them with sounds and graphic pictures, plus prodding of old memories to see if they were truly over their issues. And they were!
There were several commonalities that I started noticing about these Vets as we began working with them the first day. Even though they had never met each other before, they had much more in common than their service to our country.
Each practitioner was assigned 3-5 Vets, or their family members,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as our primary responsibilities. However, we all rotated our sessions so that we ended up working with all of the Vets, not just our own assignees. On the first morning the practitioners measured our Vets’ intensity levels,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from 10 to 1, on each of their symptoms (with 10 being highly charged or painful.) We then tapped with our assigned Vets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], individually or in small groups, as well as with Vets not assigned to us. We did this for 8-9 hours a day, while being videoed. It was pretty intense.
The Meet and Greet
I’d like to express how honored I felt to be included in the making of “Operation Emotional Freedom: The Answer” an insightful documentary about war Veterans and their struggles with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I was part of a select group of EFT experts, organized by Gary Craig, EFT Founder. Additionally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there were valuable assistants, including my favorite Vet, and EFT Practitioner, Miguel Vasquez, plus a psychologist, psychiatrist and many others support team members. The film itself was managed, directed and produced by Eric Huurre at his own expense along with his cracker-jack film crew.
I remembered how on that first night of introductions the Vets didn’t look at each other, or at us. It appeared that many of them could have bitten a nail in two. Yet at the end of our 5-day experience, the anger had completely dissipated and was replaced by joy. On the last night, some of us sat in awe in the hotel restaurant, watching these once-anxious, angry people, sitting together nearby laughing their heads off. They were talking animatedly and clowning around with each other like teenagers. We held our breaths as they were joking with the restaurant staff (and us) and behaving like a group of old friends.
Their anger, directed at different events, people or injustices, was deep and intense. It reflected the raw emotion that I had felt the first night and found so scary. As we worked with the Vets over the next few days, we heard many of the justifications for why they were so mad at the world. Most of their stories, however, were too horrific or personal to repeat.
The Evolution
This was a wonderful opportunity for me. Working with my friends, Carol Look, Sophia Cayer and the other highly gifted practitioners was a genuine blessing. I remember virtually every moment of it and will treasure it the rest of my life.
Shared Anger and Betrayal
The first night, when they brought the Vets in to meet us, the energy in the room was so highly charged it was almost crackling. The hair was standing up on my arms and a prickling chill ran through my body. Everyone was nervous,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the Vets looked angry… at us and the world.
We started seeing changes in their faces as they talked and in their postures and movements. One soldier started swinging his cane as he walked down the hallway,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where he had previously been limping like a 90year-old man. Another Vet, whom I was a bit afraid of in the beginning, transformed into a sweet, gentle soul, sporting a constant smile and twinkle in his eyes. My favorite female Vet, Debi, unleashed her terrific sense of humor, which had long-been forgotten. What a joy!
Most unexpectedly, however, was a shared sense of betrayal. Many of the Vets felt they had been let down by their commanding officers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], comrades or by their government. While their reasons for feeling betrayed varied, their stories of betrayal held the commonality of being disturbing, sad and shocking.
To actually see that level of transformation in these Vets in a few days was truly remarkable and inspiring. And to witness them go from sad to happy, from angry to playful and from wounded to healed in a matter of days was an ethereal experience. Were these really the same angry people we had met a few nights before?

Customer Service Excellence is what it takes to bring Customers back to our Company and it is excellent Customer Service that will make them want to buy more of our products or services. Implementing Service Excellence involves the whole organisation, from Managers to front-line Teams. This article teases out some of the key areas of focus in implementing top of the class Customer Service for our Customers.
Customer Service Excellence is not just about our Customer Service people or our Sales staff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though these front line employees are critical. It involves creating a culture and a leadership structure that will empower, nurture and motivate all our people to deliver that ‘want to stay’ Customer Experience.

They judge the Company based on their cumulative experiences of the product, the service and the people. For example, they may evaluate the quality of the product, or its value for money. They will even judge your Company on the way your staff talk to each other, and relate to your Manager. It all counts!
Effective Leadership Processes and Measures
An effective Leadership will have processes to discuss, monitor and measure Best Practice with Customers. They will have project Teams seeking to find that extra 10%, that extra positive experience for their Customers. They will use tools, like mapping the Customer’s Journey through the Company, to generate ideas at each contact point – always seeking the opportunity to make life easier or more pleasant for the Customer. Quality and process improvement is top of their agenda,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they give quick recognition to employees who demonstrate valuable improvements.
Customer Service Training – Small Investment with Big Pay-off
Companies often assume that investment in Customer Service Skills Training is a waste of money! It is unfortunate that these Companies do not ask their former Customers for their view! Everyone can give examples of ‘bad’ Customer experiences that would amaze the Company Leadership. Effective delivery of Customer Service Excellence will keep Customers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and generate profits – and Training plays a key part in achieving this.
Customer Service Excellence is about processes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], knowledge and behaviours. Good Customer Service Training should address each of these 3 elements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether this is internal or external training.
Above all, training adjusts the priorities and aligns the focus of all personnel, whether Customer Service, Sales,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Administration or Managers. It helps all to have a pinpoint clear focus on what they want to achieve with each Customer. They align to their shared purpose of keeping Customers coming back, and they learn the importance of their role in ensuring Company success.
Focus drives attitude and behaviours throughout the Organisation. Managers will be much more aware of desired attitudes and behaviours, and therefore will be much more likely to praise them. The Customer Care Teams will heighten their awareness to core skills and techniques with their Customers, as well as positive actions that will deliver Customer Service Excellence. Interest, support and encouragement from management will motivate them to want to perform well with their Customers. Everyone in the organisation will be singing off the same page.
Leadership Leads the Way
Everyone in an organisation takes their lead from the top. The Leadership are role models; they model the attitudes, values and behaviours that their staff will adopt. If the Leadership walks the talk,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], praises and recognises ‘going the extra mile’ for the Customer, the Customer Service Teams will feel more positive and confident in doing the same. If the Leadership demonstrate irritation or annoyance about Customers, or worse still,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], treats them as irrelevant to the Company, this will be reflected in the front line Teams.
What Management measure is also vital. What gets measured gets done also still stands, and Leadership needs to be measuring the right things. Think of the shop attendant who does not make eye contact, finishes stacking shelves before serving, or puts the money down on the counter instead of in to your hand. The Manager of that shop attendant is almost certainly measuring efficiency and might say he or she was being more efficient, handling more Customers in a much quicker way.
The Manager ought to be recognising that this attendant is efficiently and effectively sending Customers to the opposition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
Continuous Improvement and Best Practice
Customer Service Excellence is about managing, meeting and exceeding expectations. Customer Expectations are constantly changing, the bar is forever being raised. This means that Teams at all levels in the Company must respond to this by continuously seeking to identify opportunities to ‘exceed’.
Teamwork sessions held quarterly to brainstorm and generate improvement ideas are essential to achieving excellence. The Customer Care Teams themselves should be encouraged and empowered to continuously seek out Best Practice, to review and improve.

There were times during the last 30-years that commencement speakers were at a loss for words to inspire the new crop of graduates as they began their careers. Job markets had be severely affected by war, terrorism, natural disasters, the worst economy since the Great Depression, unprecedented layoffs, shrinking pay and the elimination of benefits and retirement programs.
The advice passed along from each generation is: do what you love. You know from experience this is good advice, but doesn’t resolve your choices or tell you what to do when you’re simultaneously miserable while doing what you love. Careers happen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], evolve and change based on trial and error. This is why some people stay dissatisfied, and others who are halfway into their career are still wondering what they should do when they grow up.

Contentment means different things to people, but when it comes to your career, it’s not about being laid back, giving in or doing with less. That might get you fired. It’s about developing a calm and collected state of mind that enhances your effectiveness to perform, and your resiliency to endure when things don’t go your way. It’s you’re inborn ability to be content even in situations where you’re not entirely happy or satisfied. You’ll do this if your work is meaningful and worth fighting for. If it’s not, you’re in the wrong job and satisfactions won’t matter.
Do what you love as your parents taught,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but also look for ways to love what you do. Contentment is personal and deeper than employer efforts to keep you satisfied.
