Being able to set clear boundaries requires getting enough down and alone time – a Catch-22 because it takes serious boundary setting to create that quality of time. Very few jobs in the world require the extreme hat flipping and very few workplaces entail the range of agendas and unique surprises that work-at-home parents manage.
As the kids and/or the business hit subsequent developmental stages, new rhythms have to be established - a task compounded by the number of people in the family. Families and businesses have long range and day-to-day rhythms. It’s important to create leeway in the home-based schedule to account for the inevitable chaos between the times when work and family are in sync with one another. The solopreneur walks a delicate balance between honoring the family rhythm and honoring the rhythm of the diva s/he needs to be to realize professional and personal potential.
Since the office is always there, sometimes stay-at-home workers habituate to working when they know deep inside that it's time to play with a kid or to date their spouse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which leads to all kinds of interpersonal stresses. It helps to stick with set hours unless certain pre-established criteria kick in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like a large order or a significant deadline, or to schedule time for some extra delicious playtime. Likewise, people who are on someone else’s payroll can’t dictate work parameters. Too often stay at home workers and the people around them believe they should produce full time homemaker results while producing more than full time work results. People are doing amazing things from dining room tables but unrealistic expectations are a set-up for personal and social angst.
Home based professionals, solopreneurs and small business owners do a unique juggling act. There’s nothing like commuting to the next room, a dress code that includes pajamas, and getting to kids’ concerts and games. But, the flexibility of working from home has a front and a back. The front is an incredible blessing to everyone in the family but the back can lead to burnout unlike any other.

My clients run the gamut from United Nations members, corporate executives to solopreneurs in the US, UK and Canada. In early years before profits stabilize, most business owners are reluctant to hire enough help to take earnings to the next level. Work at home parents don't hire home and/or business help soon enough and when they do, they spend far too much time justifying themselves for getting it. Let your kids and spouse see how much they matter - put them on the team. 5. Support: It can be a tough call between holding firm on your office hours and yielding to a carpool need. On the one hand, you chose your work setup to allow you to say yes to family, but on the other, you have to continually muster what it takes to stand firm for your work. Professional support is the best way to help yourself discern where the lines are and how to negotiate them so everybody wins.
Even if you barter with a colleague for a weekly mutual support call,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it’s well worth the time investment because people who coach are better able to frame their unique circumstances so they can really enjoy the fruits of their labors. Okay, by now I’m getting nervous. I had a party to give the next morning . . . tables set for 20, full of my best china and crystal . . . no electricity . . . a flood in the front of my house . . . and four chicken salads and a cream cake warming up in a refrigerator without power. After a couple more hours and a flurry of phone calls to figure out what to do, the sewer did its job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the flood disappeared from my street. I still had no electricity.
Was Nick happy because he won the award, or did he win the award because he was happy?
Just after the ladies went home, it started to rain. The rain turned into a raging thunder storm. My whole neighborhood lost electricity. At first, I wasn’t concerned. I called the electric company and the recorded message predicted that I’d have power in the next three hours. Then, I noticed that the rain had created a lake where my street used to be. When three hours had passed and I still had no lights,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I called the electric company again for an update. This time the message said, ‘due to extensive outages,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is no specified time determined for regaining power. Any previous time estimate is no longer valid.’
Our waiter, Nick, approached us, the poor guy. He found us in a foul mood. We were both tired and cranky. He looked us over and got the biggest smile on his face. It wasn’t one of those annoying fake smiles, like the waiter who wore all that bling, from the movie, Office Space. If it had been a fake smile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I would have felt like smacking him. There is nothing that turns me off more than inauthentic niceness. It feels so condescending. Like most customers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I can spot it a mile away.
The good mood and service that Nick brought to us that night helped me let go of my tension, relax and have a good night’s sleep. At 7 am the next morning, our power came back, the food and cake were brought back, and I was able to host a lovely wedding shower after all.

Now that cheered me right up. It feels good to be waited on by The Best! ‘Then, I better order a malt too,’ said Cliff. Nick brought out our delicious malts. He also brought us two large glasses of water,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which we hadn’t ordered but very much appreciated. Then, he gave us privacy to relax and unwind. He stepped in after a while to make sure we were happy with the malts, and I asked him if he received any special gifts. ‘I’m going on a trip to Puerto Vallarta,’ he said with a twinkle in his eye. It’s great to see that the leaders of that restaurant franchise value and acknowledge their customer service stars in tangible ways.
